The Infamous Shamrock Shake

Can you believe it is St. Patrick’s Day?!

When I think of St Patty’s Day, a few key words come to mind; green, leprechauns, rainbows, Irish Soda Bread, and the infamous McDonald’s Shamrock Shake.

ImageAfter taking a look at McDonald’s website to learn more about the Shamrock Shake, I was less than thrilled with the ingredients-Vanilla Reduced Fat Free Ice Cream, Shamrock Shake syrup (?), and Whipped Cream all topped with a Maraschino Cherry.

At Raw Can Roll Café, we pride ourselves on using fresh and delicious ingredients in our smoothies. We use homemade Almond Milk (click this link to learn how), fresh pressed apple juice, and fresh squeezed orange juice as liquid base (not yogurt or reduced fat ice cream).  For flavor and consistency, we use fresh fruit and extracts.

To celebrate St. Patty’s Day in 2013, the Raw Can Roll team re-created the infamous Shamrock Shake and it has been a best seller on the menu ever since! Imagine slurping through a straw and tasting a creamy mint shake you don’t have to feel bad about…

As the liquid base for our Shamrock Shake, we use homemade Almond Milk.  We then add a few scoops of banana for creaminess, organic vanilla extract, agave, KALE, and peppermint extract.

I give you my word; You WILL NOT taste any traces of kale in this smoothie. It is completely masked by the banana, mint, and agave.

Why Buy Almond Milk When You Can Make Your Own?

Homemade Almond Milk…It seems like a daunting task, but I assure you, it isn’t.

Before I began working at Raw Can Roll Café, Almond Milk was always on my grocery list.  I used almond milk in my cereal, oatmeal, smoothies, and much much more.

Last week however, I noticed something very different about my grocery list.  Almond Milk is no longer a needed item. Why you may ask? BECAUSE IT IS SO EASY TO MAKE YOURSELF!

All you need are almonds, a good blender, water, and cheesecloth.

  1. Fill your blender with 1 cup of almonds.
  2. Add water to the blender, enough to fully submerse the almonds.
  3. Blend until almonds and water are well mixed. This will result in a very liquidy base.
  4. Grab a large bowl and pour the mixture into the cheesecloth. As you begin to squeeze the cheesecloth, you will see the milk separate from the almonds.
  5. Once you release all the liquid, pour the milk into a container and fill with water.

*If you like flavored Almond Milk, try adding Raw Cacao or Strawberries with your sweetener of choice.

At Raw Can Roll Café, Almond Milk is the base for many of our Shake, Rattle, and Roll Smoothies.  Whenever customers try an Almond Milk based smoothie for the first time, their reactions are always the same “WOW, this is the BEST smoothie I’ve ever had. What do you guys put in this?!”
